Eric Kano Mayer, MD is a Staff Physician with Texas Spine and Scoliosis in Austin, Texas. Dr. Mayer has an impressive background in the nonsurgical treatment of back pain and neck pain.

Prior to moving to Austin in 2018, Dr. Mayer spent 10 years as Associate Director of the Center for Spine Health at the world renowned Cleveland Clinic. He had a dual appointment in Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Neurological Restoration. He previously acted as Center Director of Clinical Outcomes and later as Associate Director for Clinical Transformation.

Before the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Mayer spent three years in Dallas from 2005 to 2008 at the well-known PRIDE center (Productive Rehabilitation Institute of Dallas for Ergonomics). This center was nationally known for its work with helping those with complex back injuries return to activity and their jobs. He also worked for three years with a large orthopedic group in Plano, Texas.

Dr. Mayer is dual board-certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and in Sports Medicine. He completed a fellowship (the highest level of medical education in the U.S.) at the Cleveland Clinic in the specialty of Spine Medicine. His has special expertise in clinical outcomes measurement systems, spinal interventional procedures, spine health, sports medicine and functional restoration.

Dr. Mayer received his medical degree in 2001 from Georgetown University School of Medicine and his bachelor’s degree in 1995 from Georgetown University. He completed a surgical internship at Rush Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago in 2002. Dr. Mayer completed his residency at Harvard University Medical School / Spaudling Rehabilitation Hospital in 2005. Dr. Mayer began his career private practice in Dallas, Texas, before moving to Cleveland, OH.

Dr. Mayer has authored numerous book chapters and scientific papers, and he has lectured throughout North America. He is a member of several professional societies as a committee member and chairman. Dr. Mayer has an interest in clinical education and previously taught at Case Western and Lerner College of medicine as well as teaching residents and fellows. Recently, Dr. Mayer has co-founded a Spine and Musculoskeltal Medicine fellowship nationwide in 19 locations. Dr. Mayer has a focus in in socio-economic matters, representing the North America Spine Society to the Relative-Value utilization committee of AMA-CMS. He has completed advanced courses at the Mayo Clinic related to EMGs and neurophysiology.

Dr. Mayer is married with four active children. Together, they attend church and enjoy hiking, snow-skiing and paddling. Dr. Mayer plays in a soccer league and volunteers for medical outreach in the US and Central America.
