Board-Certified Neurological Surgeon
Dual Fellowship-Trained in Complex Spine Surgery, Spinal Deformity & Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery

Rory Mayer, MD, is a board-certified and dual fellowship-trained neurosurgeon specializing in adult scoliosis, complex spinal deformity, and advanced reconstructive spine surgery. Dr. Mayer is one of only a small number of neurosurgeons in the country who specializes exclusively in the surgical treatment of complex spinal deformities. Dr. Mayer focuses on the treatment of complex spinal disorders, including degenerative scoliosis, flatback syndrome, kyphosis, spinal instability, revision spine surgery, and other challenging spinal conditions. He utilizes advanced spinal instrumentation, state-of-the-art intraoperative navigation technology, and collaborates with vascular and plastic surgeons when treating some of the region's most complex spinal cases. Like his partners at Texas Spine and Scoliosis, he embraces a "conservative care first" philosophy, working closely with his Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation colleagues to ensure patients receive comprehensive, individualized spine care.

Dr. Mayer earned his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in 2012 before completing his neurosurgical residency, where he served as Chief Resident in the Department of Neurosurgery. He completed fellowship training in Complex and Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) in 2020. During his residency, he also completed an enfolded fellowship in neurocritical care and spine trauma at Baylor College of Medicine, along with additional subspecialty training in neurosurgical oncology and spine tumor surgery at the world-renowned MD Anderson Cancer Center and pediatric spinal deformity at Texas Children's Hospital.

Throughout his career, Dr. Mayer has held academic appointments at multiple leading institutions, including UCSF, Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin, and Texas A&M College of Medicine. He has also served as a consulting neurotrauma surgeon to the Dallas Cowboys and National Football League.

Dr. Mayer is actively involved in clinical research and surgical education. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed scientific publications, presented his research at national and international spine conferences, and received teaching awards from The University of Texas at Austin in recognition of his commitment to medical education. He is an active member of the Scoliosis Research Society and other leading national and international neurosurgical and spine organizations.

Dr. Mayer's clinical interests include adult scoliosis, spinal deformity, kyphosis, flatback syndrome, failed back surgery syndrome, revision scoliosis surgery, spondylolisthesis, spinal stenosis, cervical myelopathy, degenerative conditions of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine, and complex spinal reconstruction. His surgical expertise includes spinal osteotomies, complex spinal instrumentation, minimally invasive scoliosis surgery, anterior and lateral access surgery (ALIF and XLIF), and revision procedures for patients with prior spine surgery.

Through advanced surgical expertise, academic leadership, and a patient-centered approach, Dr. Mayer is dedicated to helping patients with even the most complex spinal conditions restore function, reduce pain, and improve their quality of life.
