Dr. Eeric Truumees is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon at Texas Spine and Scoliosis in Austin, Texas. He earned his undergraduate and medical degrees, with high honors, at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He then completed an internship in General Surgery followed by a residency in Orthopedic Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland. Dr. Truumees furthered his education by completing a fellowship in Spinal Surgery at William Beaumont Hospital with the world renowned Dr. Harry Herkowitz in Royal Oak, Michigan.

Prior to moving to Austin in 2010, Dr. Truumees was an attending spine surgeon at William Beaumont Hospital in Michigan, where he also served as Clinical Director for the Harold W. Gehring Center for Biomechanical Research and Implant Retrieval He also served as Adjunct Faculty for the Bioengineering Center at Wayne State University in Detroit. Today, he serves as faculty for the University of Texas, Dell School of Medicine and will be Spine Subspecialty Director for the coming residency in Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr. Truumees is internationally recognized as a leader in spine surgery. He sits on the Board of Directors for the North American Spine Society, where he serves as Council Director for the Administration and Development Council. Dr. Truumees serves in the Communiucations Cabinet for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is the Editor-in-Chief of AAOS Now. Dr. Truumees is Deputy Editor of The Spine Journal and sits on the editorial boards of several other prestigious spine journals including Spine and Clinical Spine.

With his partners in Austin, and with colleagues around the world, Dr. Truumees remains actively involved in spine research. Our spine center has three active trials. He has published widely in journals such as Spine, Medical Engineering & Physics, The Spine Journal, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics, Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery - British Volume and many more. Recently, Dr. Truumees and his partners completed an "Essential Technique" guide on microdiscectomy surgery for The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery Essential Surgical Techniques. He has published more than 100 peer reviewed articles and textbook chapters.

Dr. Truumees is a member of the following professional societies: the American Orthopaedic Association, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the North American Spine Society, the Cervical Spine Research Society, the Mid-America Orthopaedic Association, the Foundation for Orthopaedics and Complex Spine (FOCOS), and many more.

At Texas Spine and Scoliosis in central Texas, Dr. Truumees treats cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine disorders. His specialties include spinal trauma and complex/revision spine surgery.

Texas Spine Surgeon is Named New NASS President

Eeric Truumees, M.D., was named president of the North American Spine Society (NASS) during the society’s 35th annual meeting this week.

“I have been a NASS member for 20 years and during that time I have made friends in the spine community around the world and learned a lot about both clinical and non-clinical aspects of spine care,” Dr. Truumees said. “For me, those relationships and the value I have received from my NASS membership, underscore the honor of becoming the NASS president. My predecessors have created an organization that has been modeled by others around the world. I have seen how multidisciplinary organizations like NASS are ideally positioned to represent our patients and our members. For the next year, until our 36th Annual Meeting in Boston in 2021, my goals include broadening our online educational efforts, strengthening our ties to other societies and supporting our outstanding (and ever more important) advocacy work.”

Dr. Truumees is an orthopedic spine surgeon with Texas Spine and Scoliosis, and professor of orthopedic and neurological surgery at the University of Texas, Dell Medical School.

Born in Fort Benning, Ga., Dr. Truumees earned his bachelor of arts degree in biology and religious studies from the University of Virginia and earned his medical degree from UVA as a Bowman Scholar. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the Cleveland Clinic and his fellowship with Harry Herkowitz, M.D., at Beaumont Hospital in Michigan.

Dr. Truumees’ research and academic work has included more than 15 NIH and industry-sponsored multicenter trials, which generated over 30 peer-reviewed publications of original research, 40 invited publications, 50 chapters and monographs and two books. Dr. Truumees has given more than 200 national and international presentations, lectureships and instructorships.
